Conch Piercing Styling for Astra Lumina Nights

A New Reason to Shine After Dark

Vancouver has a fresh excuse to get dressed up this fall. Astra Lumina, an immersive nighttime walk by Moment Factory, opens October 22 along the Stanley Park Railway and runs through December 31. Visitors wind through nine illuminated zones where light, projection, and music turn the forest into a starlit path — and it is already shaping up to be one of the city’s most photographed outings of the season. If you are planning a night under the lights, it is the perfect occasion to add (or finally finish) a piece of ear jewelry that actually catches the light: the conch piercing.

Why the Conch Is Having a Moment

The conch sits in the shell-shaped bowl of the middle ear, named for its resemblance to a conch shell. It is one of the most versatile placements we do at the studio because it works two ways: an inner conch takes a flat-backed stud or small disc sitting almost flush against the ear, while an outer conch can carry a hoop that wraps around the ridge for a bolder, more sculptural look. Both read beautifully in photos, which is exactly why it keeps showing up at events built around light and spectacle.

  • Inner conch: subtle, minimalist, great for a first “statement” piercing.
  • Outer conch: a hoop or ring that frames the ear’s natural curve.
  • Jewelry: implant-grade titanium or 14k gold studs, discs, and hoops, sized specifically to your anatomy.

What to Expect: Placement, Jewelry, and Healing

A conch piercing is done with a sterile, single-use needle by a licensed piercer, never a piercing gun, since cartilage requires a clean, precise channel to heal well. Expect a brief, sharp pinch rather than ongoing pain. Cartilage piercings like the conch take longer to heal than a standard lobe piercing — typically six to twelve months to fully settle, even though the surface may feel fine much sooner. During that window, a twice-daily saline soak, sleeping on a travel pillow with a cutout (or on your other side), and not touching the jewelry with unwashed hands make the biggest difference in how smoothly it heals.

Styling Your Ear for the Walk

Because Astra Lumina is a slow, one-mile walk meant to be lingered over and photographed, it is a good moment to think about your whole ear as a composition rather than a single piercing. A conch pairs naturally with an existing helix, lobe, or tragus piercing to build what we call a curated ear — a set of pieces chosen to sit together rather than compete. Our piercers can walk you through sizing and placement so the new piece complements what you already have, whether that is a single lobe stud or a fuller constellation.
