Lights, Camera, Ink: Tattoo Looks for VIFF Season

The Vancouver International Film Festival is back for its 45th year, running October 1 to 11, 2026, and for eleven days the city turns into a showcase for storytelling in every form — screenings, filmmaker talks, and a downtown crowd that’s more dressed up than usual. It’s also a great excuse to think about the stories you’re carrying with you, including the ones inked on your own skin.
Tattoos as Their Own Kind of Cinema
A good film sticks with you long after the credits roll, and a good tattoo works the same way — it’s a piece you carry, one that changes meaning as you revisit it over the years. Heading into a season packed with premieres and gallery openings, a lot of our clients are drawn to pieces with a narrative feel: single scenes rather than sprawling sleeves, images that read like a still frame from a story only they know.
Festival-Season Favourites
- Fine-line portraiture — delicate linework built around a face, a hand, or a small scene, well suited to visible placements like the forearm for anyone dressing up for the week.
- Film-strip and frame motifs — a nod to the medium itself, from a simple filmstrip border to a single “frame” holding a small custom image.
- Bold single-image pieces — one striking design done in solid linework or color, meant to be the whole story rather than one chapter of a larger sleeve.
Planning Around a Big Week
If you’re hoping to show off new work during festival season, timing matters. Fresh tattoos need real healing time before they’re ready for the world — generally a few weeks at minimum, depending on placement and size — so booking now for a piece you’ll debut later in October, or simply enjoy through the fall, is the more comfortable route than trying to squeeze something in right before an event. Our artists are happy to talk through placement and sizing with that timeline in mind.
A Studio Built Around the Story You’re Telling
At Vansun Studio, we approach every consultation like a first pitch meeting: what’s the idea, who is it for, and how do we bring it to life in a way that will still feel right years from now. Our space is designed to feel like a gallery rather than a clinical shop, because we think tattooing deserves that kind of care and attention — whether you’re a longtime collector or working with an artist for the very first time.
