Winter Ink: Tattoo Ideas for Christmas Market Season

Starting November 16, Jack Poole Plaza turns into the Vancouver Christmas Market — string lights, mulled wine, and a European-village feel just a few minutes from our Granville Street studio. It’s also, quietly, one of the better times of year to start a new tattoo.

Why Winter Is a Smart Season for New Ink

Fresh tattoos need protection from the sun while they heal, and Vancouver’s grey, overcast winter does that job for you. Long sleeves and shorter days mean less UV exposure during the weeks a new piece needs to settle, which is part of why so many people use the lead-up to the holidays to finally book the design they’ve been sitting on.

Design Ideas for the Season

• Fine-line pine branches, holly, or snowflakes — small enough for a wrist, ankle, or behind the ear.
• Custom lettering pieces, a nice project for the quieter weeks before the holidays get busy.
• Minimalist line-art ornaments or string-light motifs inspired by the market itself.
• Larger custom work booked now so it’s fully healed well before summer.

Healing Through the Holidays

Winter layers are genuinely useful for aftercare — looser sleeves and breathable fabric over the area keep a healing tattoo protected without you having to think about it. As always, skip hot tubs, pools, and anything that soaks the piece, and follow the written aftercare sheet your artist gives you rather than general advice from the internet.

A Studio Built for the Season

Vansun Studio is designed to feel more like a small gallery than a typical shop — considered lighting, real art on the walls, and artists who take the time to get a design right before any ink goes down. It’s an easy stop before or after a walk through the market, whether you’re booking a small flash piece or finally starting something bigger.

Plan Ahead

December books up fast once the market and holiday season are in full swing, so if you want a piece finished — and mostly healed — before year-end parties, now’s a good time to get on the calendar.
